St Stephen's Choir
St Stephen's Uniting Church has had a fine choral tradition almost continuously from the time of its formation as a Presbyterian church in the 19th century. St Stephen's is always looking for choristers of any age to join our committed group of volunteers who sing at the 10:00 am service every Sunday.
There is no mid-week rehearsal for the choir. Rehearsals begin at 9:00 am on Sundays in the church. A rehearsal is also held after the morning service on most Sundays.
St Stephen's currently offers eight student choral scholarships each year (two each for soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and one organ scholarship.
If you can read music and would like to join the choir (or sing with us for a short time), please contact Huw Belling, our Choral Director or chat to us after the service on Sundays.

We love our good choir: Scholarships are available.
Spread the word.
With the support of the St Stephens Sydney Music and Cultural Foundation, St Stephens Uniting Church is pleased to offer a number of choral scholarships for all voice types for 2023, with the possibility of commencement immediately.
Scholarships are awarded to current students and graduates continuing their musical studies. Scholarships are intended to provide financial support and development opportunities for young musicians commencing their careers and to encourage the practice and development of liturgical music in Sydney. Scholars are typically vocal students or instrumentalists with some choral experience. The choir typically has two scholars per voice type (SATB). Scholars contribute to the St Stephen’s Church Choir which also includes volunteer choristers.
About the choir
The choir is under the direction of Dr Huw Belling working with organist Mark Quarmby. We rehearse at 9am on Sunday mornings for a 10am service, usually finishing around 11:15. After a short break the choir rehearses from around 11:30-12:30 for the following weeks.
Christmas and Easter account for the only non-Sunday services (which nevertheless fall on public holidays). Larger scale services such as these are prepared in extended rehearsals on Sundays. The choir recesses in January of each year but otherwise sings every Sunday, with professional and personal leave for scholars possible by arrangement in advance.
From time-to-time St Stephens commissions and premieres new works as part of its commitment to advancing liturgical music in Sydney.
Expectations
Scholars should be confident leading their part in standard liturgical repertoire on a weekly basis. Music is sent out in advance.-
Scholars commit to be largely available from 9am-12:30pm Sundays.
Scholars must be available for Easter and Christmas 2023
How to apply
Applicants should email a resume to [email protected]. Applicants will be expected to undertake an audition on a Sunday morning and be interviewed by the music team and the Minister Rev Ken Day.
We love our good choir: Volunteers in the choir.
We have volunteers in our choir, and you or someone you know might like to be one. You need to be able to read music, and have a love for singing in a worship service on Sundays. Regular participation is hoped for, along with the discipline of being in a team, assisting the congregation to focus on God.
